About the Art
A Kumeyaay Creation Story is a 100-foot mural on the east side of Escondido Public Library. It illustrates the Kumeyaay origin myth: the story begins with the earth covered in salt water and tule, with no dry land, telling of two brothers - the older brother Tuchaipa and the younger twin Yokomatis. Using sacred tobacco they lifted the heavens to form the sky and piled up mud to shape the land. Finally, Tuchaipa molded the first humans out of mud, created the sun and moon, and the formed hills and valleys to sustain the people.
The design wasn't just the artist's invention — it was inspired by Kumeyaay scholar/historian Michael Connolly Miskwish, who shared Kumeyaay cosmology, traditional night-sky knowledge, and the creation story itself with the project.
About the Artist
The mural was created by Tim Topalov, working through his San Diego-based studio Flow&Form. Flow&Form describes itself as a boutique design studio specializing in mural art and branding.
Topalov's roots are in street art. His broader portfolio spans other California murals like Techno Oak, Sage Hill Ranch, Beach Hub, and Forest Graffiti, alongside branding and illustration work for various clients.
